If the target of a seemingly racist statement finds no offense, should other people?

ESPN recently caused an uproar for using the headline “Chink In The Armor” in reference to Jeremy Lin.  Lin later issued a comment that he didn’t think it was intentional and discussed the need for forgiveness.  What do you think?
